SURAKSHA

Shelter & Protection

Rotary International supports elderly individuals, destitutes, vulnerable women, and orphans through community-driven initiatives organized under its Rotary Areas of Focus, particularly Community Economic Development, Maternal and Child Health, and Peacebuilding. Rotary clubs worldwide execute these projects through direct club actions, global grants and district grants.

2. ABHAYA

  1. Kottayam Panachikadu Projects – Housing and Activity Centre Projects in the one acre located in Panachikadu, Kottayam donated to the Rotary Trust by Rtn PP Mathew, 2026-27 President of the Rotary Club of Kottayam.
  2. General Programs:
    1. Mobile Rotary Kitchens: Rotary Clubs partner with local NGOs / Kudumbasree to distribute daily hot meals to homeless and destitute populations living on the streets.
    2. Safe Shelters: Funding infrastructure upgrades, security systems, and counseling services for transitional homes hosting victims of domestic abuse or homelessness.
    3. Orphanage Infrastructure Upgrades: Rotarians renovate living quarters, install clean water purification systems, build modern sanitation facilities, and set up computer labs in orphanages.
    4. Nutrition and Wellness Drives: Supplying monthly rations, milk, and vitamin supplements to orphanages to eradicate childhood malnutrition.
    5. Foster Care & Counseling Support: Partnering with child welfare organizations to provide psychological therapy, life skills training, and mentorship to children transitioning out of care systems.

3. SUBHIKSHA – ANNADAANAM

  1. Mobile Rotary Kitchens: Rotary clubs partner with local NGOs / Kudumbasree to distribute daily hot meals to homeless and destitute populations living on the streets.
  2. Annadanam / Happy Meals Drives: Regular weekend or festival-driven distribution camps organized by clubs at shelters, orphanages, and old age homes to provide high-quality, culturally appropriate meals.
  3. Hunger Free Towns / Panchayats: Collaborate and partner with other Clubs, NGOs and Panchayats / Municipalities and Hotels to implement a HUNGER FREE area.

4. VASTRADAANAM

  1. Rotary Clothing Project: The Clubs should select ideal places like Orphanage Homes, Old Age Homes, Govt Hospitals, Govt Schools, Slums, Tribal Colonies etc to identify the needs of different types of Cloths and Dresses required by the inmates.

    Sources: Pre-owned and Unused clothes from Club Members which are professionally laundered and sanitized. Partner with local textile dealers, garment manufacturers, or export houses to secure surplus stock, minor-defect pieces, or end-of-season inventory at factory cost. Try to partner with them for free supply.

  2. Rotary Open Wardrobe Project: Rotarians and donors place used or new clothing in public places like Railway Stations, Bus Stands, Parks, Police Stations etc for use of needy citizens.

5. ROPE (ROTARY POLICE ENGAGEMENT)

ROPE is an ongoing Rotary District Program.

  1. Rotary Shield: Rotary branded sunglasses for Traffic Police.
  2. Toofan Schemes: Support to the Police for Narco detection etc.
  3. Miscellaneous: Various need based programs as intimated by the District from time to time.

6. LEGAL PROTECTION

  1. Legal Aid Program: To provide legal protection and aid to poor and marginalized groups Clubs can partner with local Bar Associations, Lawyers’ Unions, and Groups of Advocates to provide free legal services to underprivileged people in society who cannot bear the expenses of legal formalities and advocate’s fees. The Club can announce a date for this program. Wide publicity should be given to inform people in advance to bring all records and documents for verification.
  2. Legal awareness camp and Seminar on: Child Protection Laws, Domestic Violence Rights, Cyber Crime laws, Protection from Police Harassment, Senior Citizen Care, Consumer Fraud, Food and Housing Subsidies, Inheritance and Land Rights, Filing a First Information Report (FIR).

7. ROAD SAFETY

Awareness Seminars and Educational Programs:

  1. Student Campaigns: Organize road safety seminars in high schools and colleges, led by Motor Vehicle Inspectors or Enforcement Officers, teaching students traffic regulations and pedestrian safety.
  2. Driver Training: Targeted safety classes for auto-rickshaw and taxi drivers, ensuring commercial vehicle operators understand the rules of the road.
  3. Police Collaboration Projects: Through initiatives like ROPE (Rotary Police Engagement), clubs directly support the Kerala Police’s traffic campaigns by facilitating public safety meetings and supplying informational resources to various police stations.
  4. Infrastructure Aid: Projects to support local traffic enforcement by installing solar blinkers, automated traffic signals, and speed calming devices in accident-prone zones or outside busy schools.
  5. Public Resources: Donate or distribute vital road safety manuals, traffic regulations literature, and informational materials to local police stations to aid their community enforcement drives.
  6. Traffic Etiquette: Training programs for promoting traffic etiquette to foster harmonious road behaviour and prevent road rage.

8. INSURANCE & INVESTMENT PLANNING

  1. Seminars and Awareness programs: Organise these programs to educate and raise awareness about insurance and investment schemes and plans offered by various insurance companies, health insurance companies, the postal department, banks, etc.
  2. Rotary Care Connect: Rotary CareConnect is a healthcare initiative that partners with multi-specialty and super-specialty hospitals to provide Rotarians and their immediate family members with priority access to medical services. Partner hospitals will issue a Rotary CareConnect Priority Card, enabling faster doctor consultations, priority appointments, and special discounts on consultations, diagnostics, treatments, and other hospital services.

    Why Should We Do It? Suraksha – To ensure timely, affordable, and quality healthcare for Rotarians and their families while strengthening Rotary’s service value and building lasting partnerships with leading hospitals.

    How Will We Do It? Identify and partner with reputed hospitals, sign MoUs, issue Priority Cards to members, and educate Rotarians on how to use the benefits. Clubs will coordinate registrations and hospital tie-ups.

    When Should We Do It? The project can be launched at the beginning of the Rotary year and expanded throughout the year by adding more hospital partners across the district.

9. WAITING SHELTERS

Public Bus Passenger Shelters: Construct standard community-funded structures installed at busy junctions, rural pockets, or schools. They generally include durable seating, a concrete roof, and club branding.

Coordinate with the local Gram Panchayat, Municipality, or the Public Works Department (PWD) to secure land clearance and avoid unscientific placements. Projects are usually financed via a mixture of member donations, Rotary Foundation Global Grants, or co-sponsored corporate social responsibility (CSR) funds from regional businesses.
