Disease Prevention & Treatment

Rotary International has been actively involved in disease prevention and treatment initiatives worldwide, including in our country and state. Efforts focus on enhancing healthcare, accessibility for all age groups and tackling both communicable and non-communicable diseases.

Projects & Programs for Rotary Clubs

1. SANJEEVANI снлеждвни – Life Saving Programs

Providing Ventilators, Dialysis Machines, Defibrillators, Ambulances, Mobile Blood Bank and other equipment to hospitals with the help of CSR Funds, Global Grants, District Grants, Contributions from Rotarians & Sponsorships. The Clubs can also collaborate with local NGOs to implement this project.

2. HRIDAYAROGYAM хгвано – Cancer Care (Cardiac)

The Clubs can organize heart surgeries & related cardio – vascular projects in collaboration with local Hospitals, DMOs [Government Hospitals], IMA, Panchayats, Municipalities and other NGOs like Residential Associations, Elder’s Forum, etc.

  1. Cardiac Care Awareness Camps / Programs
  2. Angioplasty and Cardio Vascular Surgeries
  3. Detection Camps for Cardiac problems
3. DHRISHTI пор – Eye Care

Organise the following projects in collaboration with the District Medical Office, National Program for Control of Blindness and Visual Impairment (NPCB&VI) and National Health Mission (NHM) Kerala.

  1. Vision Screening of Students in Schools and Provision of Spectacles – Recent studies estimate that children between the ages 0 and 14 years contribute 25.9% of the total Indian population. Worldwide, childhood blindness accounts for the second largest cause of blind-person years next to cataract. Globally approximately 70 million cases of blindness are caused by childhood blindness. Children often do not complain of defective vision and may not even be aware of their problem. It is recommended to screen children for early detection and intervention to provide them with the best opportunities to learn and develop. Organize Vision Screening projects in Schools with the help of PTA, DMO Health Authorities like NPCB & VI and NHM and Local Eye Care Hospitals. Provide spectacles to needy children with help of NPCB & VI and NHM, local NGOs and Vision Spring.
  2. Cataract Detection & IOL Surgeries – Organize free Cataract detection camps and provide free Cataract (IOL-Intra Ocular Lens) surgeries to poor patients with the help of NPCB & VI, NGOs and other sponsors.
4. SHRAVANAM теп – Ear Care

It is estimated that up to 9 to 15% of students exhibit at least a transient hearing loss at some time during their school years sufficient enough to interfere with education. Hearing deficits of severe to profound degree in children can interfere with oral communication, language and psycho-social development, and classroom learning. A child, hard of hearing or deaf who receives the remedial services at an early age, is more likely to achieve optimal speech, language, and social skill acquisition.

  1. Pure tone Audiometric Screening in Schools – The Clubs can arrange Pure tone Audiometric Screening in Schools in collaboration with DMO, NHM and NGOs. The District will also provide the details of private agencies which conduct Pure tone Audiometric Screening. The most accepted method of screening hearing in school-going children is Pure Tone audiometry to identify the children with middle ear disease and to supplement the information obtained in Pure Tone audiometry. The time taken to screen one child will be approximately 15 minutes. Hence, it is advisable to take the advice of teachers to select only those who are suspected of having hearing deficiency and require testing.
  2. Project Dhwani (Hearing Restoration) – Partner with major clinical hubs like Lourdes Hospital, Kochi etc. Sponsor advanced ENT screenings, provide digital hearing aids, or fund complex cochlear implant surgeries for economically backward children / adults.
5. DANTA RAKSHA тру – Oral Health & Hygiene

Dental caries (cavities) and gingivitis are the most prevalent oral health problems affecting children in Kerala. Studies indicate that over 50% of children in the state suffer from dental decay before adolescence. These issues are primarily driven by sticky sugar consumption, inadequate brushing habits, and a general lack of early preventive care. Moreover, oral health decline may lead to multiple other causes including diseases.

Dental Screening Camps – The Clubs can organize Dental Camps in schools, factories etc with the help of Hospitals, Clinics and a) Local branches of Indian Dental Association [IDA] & b) Rashtriya Bal Swasthya Karyakram (RBSK) which is a major central government initiative under India’s National Health Mission (NHM) which is contacted through DMOs dedicated to child health screening and early intervention services.

6. NIVARANAM ндв – Vaccinations & Prevention – HIV, Hepatitis, HPV etc

Rotary Clubs can play a critical role in disease prevention by partnering with local health departments, corporate CSR wings, and private medical colleges & Hospitals.

  1. HIV Prevention & Treatment Support Projects – While there is currently no medical vaccine available to prevent HIV, clubs can focus on prevention through education and screening. Projects must pivot toward awareness, testing, and a sensitive approach to patients.
    1. Red Ribbon Club Partnerships: Collaborate with college Red Ribbon Clubs and National Service Scheme (NSS) units to sponsor structured workshops on HIV awareness, prevention, and reducing social stigma.
    2. Prenatal Screening Support: Sponsor early HIV screening kits for pregnant women at primary health centres to prevent mother-to-child transmission.
  2. Direct Immunization Programs – Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) – The Kerala Health Department has launched a pilot HPV vaccination program targeting Plus One and Plus Two schoolgirls to build a cervical cancer-free state. Rotary clubs are officially listed as key partners. The HPV vaccination program is a current running program in our District and details of this program will be given to Clubs as per their request. The HPV vaccination program can be implemented with the help of NHM and CSR funds of Hospitals like KIMS Healthcare, Anantapuri Hospitals etc.
  3. Hepatitis Vaccination & Screening Projects – Hepatitis B is highly vaccine-preventable, making it a staple target for sustainable Rotary Club projects.
    1. Newborn & Under-10 Village Sweeps: Launch multi-dose camps in rural panchayats where children missed their primary schedule. Provide the required three-dose regimen spread across consecutive months.
    2. High-Risk Group Immunisation: Organise dedicated protection clinics for high-risk workers, including sanitation workers, healthcare personnel, and daily wage labourers.
    3. Integrated ‘World Hepatitis Day’ Camps: Run screening and vaccination camps on July 28th. Combine blood testing for Hepatitis B and C with immediate vaccine administration for negative cases.
7. AROGYA SOUKHYAM гън ср – Medical Camps

Organising medical camps by Rotary Clubs in Kerala is vital for bridging local healthcare gaps, enabling early disease detection, and supporting the state’s public health infrastructure. While Kerala boasts a robust primary healthcare network, Rotary medical camps provide targeted support that alleviates pressure on the public system and reaches vulnerable pockets.

Organising Medical Camps Reaching Vulnerable & Marginalized Communities:

  1. Tribal Outreach: Rural areas, such as the Tribal Communities, experience geographic barriers to major hospitals. Multi-specialty tribal camps with the support of the Government machinery and private hospitals with diagnostic tools, dental clinics, and cardiac screenings bring health care to their doorstep.
  2. Coastal & Migrant Populations: Camps cater to isolated coastal fisherfolk and the large migrant labourer workforce, who face language and socio-economic barriers at local hospitals.
  3. Cashew Workers: The primary medical purpose of health initiatives for cashew workers is to screen for, treat, and prevent severe occupational health hazards which may be caused by certain cashew processing methods.
  4. Plantation Workers: The primary medical purpose of health camps for plantation workers is to deliver preventive and curative healthcare directly to isolated estates, targeting the severe occupational health hazards and nutritional deficiencies unique to this community. Because plantation areas (such as rubber, tea, cardamom, and coffee estates) are geographically isolated with limited access to mainstream hospitals, these on-site mobile camps serve as the main defense against chronic diseases and workplace injuries.
  5. Rotary Programs: Support sustainable initiatives such as the Rotary Clinic, run by Rotary Clubs.
8. AHSHWASAM ггн с – Palliative Care

Rotary Clubs can collaborate with local bodies, non-profit organizations, and the State run Kerala Care Palliative Network Initiative, to run highly effective programs.

  1. Mobile Palliative “Home Care” Units: Medical Van Donations – Donate dedicated multi-utility vehicles or vans to local Panchayats or existing municipal Pain & Palliative Care Units. This removes the high expense of hired transit. The public image of Rotary can also be enhanced.
  2. Patient Rehabilitation & Family Support Programs: Chronic illnesses drain a household’s economic capability, making socio-economic support a core component of total palliative care.
  3. Monthly Grocery & Ration Kits: Launch a structured partnership with organizations like Pallium India to sponsor monthly food and essential nutrition kits for families whose primary breadwinners are bedridden.
  4. Educational Scholarships for Dependents: Create a specific club fund that pays for the school tuition, uniforms, and books of children whose parents are undergoing long-term end-of-life care.
  5. Collaboration with Pallium India or Other Such Institutions: Pallium India is a premier national charitable trust and non-governmental organisation (NGO) dedicated to providing free palliative care, effective pain relief, and holistic medical support to patients battling chronic, life-limiting, or bedridden illnesses. Collaborate with such organizations for wider reach.
  6. Rotary Programs: Support to Palliative Care Clinics or Programs run by Rotary Clubs.
9. PRATHYASHA тг – Cancer Care

Cancer care projects by Rotary Clubs target the state’s rising incidence of oncology cases by focusing on early screening technology, infrastructural medical equipment grants, and patient support networks. Collaborating with major Government oncology centres and Private hospital chains allows clubs to launch highly impactful initiatives.

  1. Advanced Screening & Early Detection Programs: Early diagnosis remains the most powerful tool to reduce oncology mortality rates in local communities.
  2. AI-Powered Mobile Mammography: Sponsor non-invasive, AI-driven thermal imaging and digital mammogram screening vans. This project is currently running in our District and Clubs can avail details from the District Office.
  3. Integrated Regional Screenings: Join ongoing, high-visibility medical campaigns. Clubs can partner with media houses and specialized Hospitals to run the comprehensive free diagnostic screening camps.
  4. Oncology Support Groups: Allocate club resources to launch structured hospital support groups (such as the Amritam cancer network) that offer psychological counseling, post-operative garments, and survivor-to-patient mentorship.
  5. Treatment: Treatment for cancer patients – radiation, chemotherapy, surgery etc.
10. SAYANAM сл – Geriatric Care

Kerala has the highest percentage of elderly population in India. This makes geriatric care one of the most high-impact avenues for Rotary Clubs. Many senior citizens in Kerala live alone because their children work abroad or in other states (often called the “Empty Nest” phenomenon). Mobility is their biggest barrier to healthcare.

  1. Doorstep Medical Vans: Launch dedicated mobile vans staffed with a doctor, a nurse, and basic lab equipment. These vans visit homes especially in fixed rural panchayats weekly to check blood pressure, blood sugar, and distribute routine medicines.
  2. Physiotherapy on Wheels: Partner with local physiotherapy colleges to run a mobile unit equipped with Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS) machines, ultrasound therapy, and traction kits to treat age-related arthritis and mobility issues at home.
  3. Memory Cafés & Daycare Centres: Partner with organizations like the Alzheimer’s and Related Disorders Society of India (ARDSI). Fund and set up day-care spaces where dementia patients can engage in cognitive exercises, art therapy, and social interaction while their caregivers get a respite.
  4. Cognitive Screening Camps: Organize free community screening camps utilizing simple tools like the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) to detect early-stage dementia and memory loss.
  5. Rotary Senior Activity & Wellness Clubs – “Sayahna Sandhyakal”
    1. Evening Recreation Centres: Set up senior citizen clubs in partnership with local municipalities. Provide a space equipped with newspapers, books, carrom boards, chess, and television.
    2. Geriatric Yoga & Fitness: Fund weekly gentle yoga, meditation, and low-impact aerobics sessions led by certified instructors to improve balance and prevent falls.
  6. Rotary Programs: Support to Geriatric Clinics or Programs operated by Rotary Clubs.
  7. Elderly Daycare & Recreational Centers: Clubs establish spaces providing nutritious meals, medical checkups, and social interaction to combat geriatric isolation.
  8. Adopt-a-Gran Initiatives: Rotarians sponsor the monthly living, grocery, and medical expenses of abandoned or low-income senior citizens.
  9. Geriatric Healthcare Camps: Specialized mobile clinics offer free screening for diabetes, hypertension, vision impairment, and provide free corrective surgeries or assistive devices like hearing aids.
11. KARUTHAL нпу – Prevention of Life Style Diseases

Preventing lifestyle diseases – specifically Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) like diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular illnesses, stroke, and obesity – is a top public health priority in Kerala. Due to dietary shifts and sedentary habits, Kerala faces India’s highest prevalence of these conditions. Early detection is critical since conditions like hypertension and early-stage diabetes often show no symptoms until complications arise.

  1. Workplace & Panchayat Screenings: Establish rapid screening booths at high-density transit points (such as railway stations, KSRTC bus stands, and civil stations) to check Blood Pressure (BP), Random Blood Sugar (RBS), and Body Mass Index (BMI).
  2. Corporate & Government Office Audits: Partner with state departments or local banks to screen desk-bound employees. Provide them with personalized risk-assessment cards.
  3. “Catch Them Young” School & College Interventions – Lifestyle patterns are established during childhood and adolescence, making educational institutions high-impact intervention zones.
    1. “Anti-Junk Food” campaigns: Partner with school managements to audit school canteens. Replace highly processed snacks with healthy, localized alternatives (like millet-based snacks or traditional steamed foods).
    2. Rotaract / Interact Fitness Leagues: Launch active inter-school or inter-collegiate sports, cycling clubs, or marathon events through local Rotaract and Interact clubs to make physical activity culturally appealing to youth.
  4. “Sugar-Free Campus” Pledges: Sponsor institutional seminars led by clinical nutritionists to educate students on the hidden sugar content in carbonated soft drinks, energy drinks, and packaged juices.
  5. Rotary Walkways & “Safe Streets”: Collaborate with municipal bodies and the Police to designate specific town roads as “Vehicle-Free Walking Zones” for a few hours every Sunday morning to promote jogging, cycling, and family exercise.
  6. Public Yoga & Aerobics Hubs: Sponsor free, weekly morning yoga or Zumba sessions led by certified trainers at public maidans, specifically targeting homemakers and senior citizens.
  7. Leverage Observance Days: Launch these projects on high-visibility global health days to maximize media coverage and public turn-out: April 7: World Health Day, September 29: World Heart Day, November 14: World Diabetes Day etc.
12. SAHAYI сн – Enable the Disabled

The “Enable the Disabled” initiative historically championed in the Rotary world and in our Rotary District, focuses on restoring independence, dignity, and economic self-reliance to people with physical and cognitive disabilities.

  1. Custom Artificial Limb Camps (eg. Jaipur Limb Initiative): Partner with technical prosthetic teams to host spatial assessment and distribution projects for Artificial Limb Projects to distribute custom-moulded, highly adaptive prosthetics to amputees. This project can be implemented with the help of Global Grants.
  2. Wheelchair Projects: Go beyond generic configurations. Work with regional care facilities, NGOs to distribute specialized cerebral palsy chairs, active wheelchairs, and motorized tricycles for need based persons. This project can be implemented through Global grants also.
  3. Pediatric Clubfoot “Ponseti” Clinics: Establish structural tie-ups with cooperative or public hospitals. For instance, the Rotary Club of Perinthalmanna pioneered long-term clinics at EMS Cooperative Hospital, offering free serial plastering, bracing shoes, and tenotomy surgeries for children up to 5 years old.
  4. “AtmaNirbhar” Micro-Enterprise Grants: Issue seed funding, computerized setups, or specially designed tailoring machines to disabled individuals, allowing them to open neighborhood shops or work independently from home.
13. SUSHRUTA рк – Corrective Procedures

Rotary Clubs can play a vital role in executing physical and mental corrective projects that restore bodily function, treat congenital anomalies, and provide psychiatric rehabilitation. By partnering with the state’s extensive network of cooperative hospitals, private medical trust networks, and specialized non-governmental organisations (NGOs), clubs can execute highly impactful, life-changing interventions.

  1. “Cleft Expression” (Smile Train Alliances): Organise screening camps to identify children and adults with cleft lips and palates. Provide fully funded corrective maxillo-facial surgeries, post-operative speech therapy, and nutritional counselling.
  2. Clubfoot Correction (The Ponseti Method): Collaborate with orthopaedic departments at local government or cooperative hospitals. Sponsor the required series of corrective plaster casts, minor tenotomy surgeries, and specialized bracing shoes for infants to prevent permanent walking disabilities.
  3. Miscellaneous: Support to miscellaneous corrective procedures, including reconstructive plastic surgery consequent to accidents and life saving surgeries.
14. SWASTHYAM рт – Wellness

    3. Senior Citizen Memory Cafés: Work with localized chapters of Pallium India or Alzheimer’s & Related Disorders Society of India (ARDSI) to set up community recreation hubs where elderly individuals can engage in cognitive games, light group fitness, and social interaction to prevent loneliness.
  3. Nutritional Literacy & Dietary Wellness
    1. Millet & Whole-Grain Cooking Expos: Organize community cooking competitions in partnership with Kudumbashree units to teach families how to replace refined carbohydrates with high-fiber grains and millets.
    2. School Canteen Nutrition Overhauls: Run “Catch Them Young” campaigns by auditing school canteens to eliminate ultra-processed junk food and introduce healthy, localized snacks.
    3. Organic Kitchen Garden Subsidies: Distribute free grow-bags, organic seeds, and basic composting setups to households to encourage families to grow their own pesticide-free vegetables.
15. MUKTHI с – Prevention of Substance Abuse

Rotary clubs can effectively prevent substance abuse by focusing on three key areas: Youth Education, Community Initiatives, and Recovery Support. The most powerful resource for these projects is the Rotary Action Group for Addiction Prevention (RAG AP), which provides toolkits, expert guidance, and proven project models.

  1. Youth & School-Based Prevention
    1. “Project Chetna” Workshops: Organize sensitization workshops for teachers and parents to help them identify early signs of distress or drug use in students.
    2. Peer-to-Peer Influencer Programs: Establish “Drug-Free Clubs” or “Youth Prevention Influencers” where student leaders are trained to mentor peers and promote healthy lifestyles, reducing the stigma of saying “NO”.
    3. Creative Competitions: Host elocution, poster-making, or essay writing contests in local schools with themes like “High on Life, Not Drugs” to engage students creatively.
    4. Emotional Resilience Training: Fund or facilitate Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) programs that teach students healthy ways to cope with stress and emotions, addressing the “self-medication” pathway to addiction.
  2. Direct Community Action & Safety
    1. Prescription Drug Take-Back Days: Partner with local law enforcement or pharmacies to host collection events for expired or unused medications. This removes dangerous opioids from home medicine cabinets where many addictions start.
    2. Distribute Disposal Kits: Purchase and distribute at-home deactivation bags (e.g., Deterra) that allow residents to safely destroy old pills by adding water and sealing the bag.
    3. Naloxone (Narcan) Training: Organize “Project Smart” training sessions where community members learn how to administer Naloxone, a life-saving overdose reversal drug. This should be done strictly under the supervision of registered medical personnel.
    4. “5-A” Advocacy Campaigns: Launch public awareness campaigns encouraging local healthcare providers to adopt the “5-A Strategy” (Ask, Assess, Advise, Assist, Arrange) to better identify at-risk patients.
  3. Interact / Rotaract – Specific Programs for and involving Interactors and Rotaractors for prevention of Drug Abuse.
16. MAATRU CHIKITSA н – Alternative Medicine

Rotary clubs in Kerala can execute high-impact alternative medicine projects like Ayurveda, Homeopathy, Yoga etc. by partnering with licensed institutions, securing Rotary Foundation Grants, and aligning with the Hospitals in these categories.
